Documents required for the sale of a car or scooter in Thailand
The following documents are required to sell a vehicle in Thailand:
Scroll
Vehicle Registration
Vehicle registration document (Green Book / Blue Book). The original vehicle registration document is the most important document. It confirms the vehicle’s owner.
Passport or Thai ID
A copy of the seller’s and buyer’s passport or Thai ID.
Proof of address
Proof of address required for change of address
- Thai nationals: Thai ID + Household Registration (Tabien Baan)
- Foreign nationals: Residence Certificate or Work Permit or Yellow Book
A change of address is not possible without valid proof of address.
Sales Contract
Sales contract (optional, but recommended) to protect both parties.
Power of Attorney
Power of attorney (if you are not present in person), if the sale is being handled by another person.
Important Note
The vehicle must be fully paid off and free of any outstanding debt.
- No outstanding financing (bank / lease)
- No outstanding loans on the vehicle
- The vehicle registration document must not be held by the bank
As long as the bank holds the vehicle registration document, an official sale is not possible.
Exception:
A sale is possible if the buyer pays off the remaining debt directly to the bank and the vehicle registration document is subsequently released.
